InspirED Convention Highlights

Over the past two days I've been at our annual teachers/educators convention. It was wonderful to be with almost 1800 other educators - teachers, SEAs, support staff and admin from many schools throughout BC and Washington state.

I learned so much! I am still processing it and will continue to process over the next few weeks.

There was a weather workshop where we were taught some great hands-on activities to do in our weather units. I'm looking forward to trying those out this school year.

I attended a class on boundaries. That was interesting, and will be useful information for school, home and every part of life with other people! I felt a bit like I was attending a marriage conference without my husband, though, so it was a bit different than I was expecting.

The final workshop that I attended (besides the 3 that I led) was called Maker Space Ed. In my classroom this year I have set up a "Maker Space" and this is what I was anticipating the class to be about. When I walked in and saw that the majority of attendees were male high school science teachers, I immediately thought I must be in the wrong place. So, what did I do? I boldly went to sit in the middle at the front. I was still thinking that I had signed up for the wrong workshop, but I wasn't going to let anyone else know that this might be the case! However, I was pleasantly surprised. This workshop was really geared for K-12 teachers. I was able to leave with resources and new ideas for my maker space, as well as ideas for the coding component of the Kindergarten curriculum. The workshop ended with a discussion on how girls and boys are the same and different  when it comes to making things (and breaking/taking things apart).

Here are a couple pictures of the Maker Space in my classroom. I will add some of the new ideas I learned this week as the year progresses. My students love this space and I am sure the parents do, too, because so many creative projects are being taken home! ;)

Markers, glue, scissors, pipe cleaners, paper, tape, empty tp rolls, and string... these are a few of the things that can be found in my Maker Space.
